American rock band Green Day, started out in the punk music scene in the East Bay Area of Northern California. Friends, Billy Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt formed a band in 1987 called "Sweet Children".
The band soon changed their name to Green Day as to avoid confusion with another local band at the time.
