Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were formed in 1976 by Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Benmont Trench. Before gaining their fame under Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, this particular trio went by the name "Mudcrutch". Mudcrutch had been signed by Shelter Records, to which Mudcrutch recorded their single "Depot Street", which failed to chart. The band broke up briefly, regrouped and added Stan Lynch and Ron Blair to the lineup to form the first line up of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The Heartbreakers actually gained popularity first in the UK before attaining success in the United States. The Heartbreakers line up has made some changes through the years yet the original three still remain with the band.
